Mastering the Performance Management Chart (PMC): CTL, ATL, and TSB Explained

Mastering the Performance Management Chart

The Performance Management Chart (PMC) is one of the most powerful tools in modern endurance coaching. By quantifying daily training load (TSS), the model models two physiological impulses:

  1. Fitness (CTL - Chronic Training Load): An exponentially weighted moving average (typically 42 days) of your daily training load.
  2. Fatigue (ATL - Acute Training Load): A short-term average (typically 7 days) capturing recent fatigue.

The Golden Equation: Training Stress Balance (TSB)

$$ ext{TSB} = ext{CTL}{ ext{yesterday}} - ext{ATL}{ ext{yesterday}}$$

When TSB is positive, you are fresh; when negative, you are absorbing training stress. Timing your peak TSB (+10 to +25) on race day is the art and science of tapering.

"Fatigue masks fitness. True performance emerges when fatigue dissipates while fitness remains high."
